Q:
I need some help. I will be returing from Afghanistan in May 2012. I want to take my dad fishing for halibut in Alaska when I return. Can I get some suggestions on charters, lodging and overall info?

I fished out of Seward last summer. It's an awesome little town with lots of local stuff to check out, including a very nice aquarium. Charters are easy to find and very successful. Thanks for serving, and come home safely.
Do you know what town you want to go out of? Homer usually posts bigger fish, and because of where it is located, it is a shorted boat ride to productive waters, which means more time fishing. On the other hand, I very much prefer Valdez. You don't get any of the cruise ship tourists and the crowds from Anchorage and the town just seems more "genuine" to me.
Or if you have any other ports in mind, just speak up and I would be happy to let you in on my experiences there.

The army has a very nice recreation center at Seward. You can find them by doing a google search. They are much less expensive than the civilian resorts and have very good rooms. Check out Glaciers edge charters. The guy that took us out was so good many other boats followed him around to find fish. You can click my username and peruse the 10 page photo section to see the fish we caught. Also Cpt Mike's Charters in Homer did a great job getting us on Halibut. If you want variety you should go to Seward. Check out the website for Glaciers edge charters-they catch everything-Salmon, Rock bass, Ling Cod, Halibut and even sharks. About myself-retired SFC lived in AK for 3.5 years. Been to both places many times-last was 4 years ago. My best Halibut was 94 lb. BTW there are many bed and Breakfasts in Homer and Seward.
Beware some of the boat operators. I have heard some sad stories about people paying lots to go halibut fishing and not having a good experience. It is common to catch many small fish in the 10 to 20 pound range. A good skipper will release them and let you keep fishing until you get your limit (2) of nice big fish. Something like 30 lb or larger. I have seen folks come back in with a pair of chickens (small halibut) after a short fishing trip that cost them 200 bucks.

Try this link to get Capt. Mike's charters in Homer if it does not work you can do a search and find them. I did a search for Glacier's edge charters and had no luck maybe spelled it wrong or maybe he has retired. Good luck and have a good time I did.
I went to Kodiak Island in July 2010. We limited out on halibut three days in a row.
We also caught ling cod, grey cod, rock fish, silver salmon and king salmon.
There is a Best Western in walking distance of the boat dock.
A superb boat and a very likeable and knowledgable captain at: www.magnumcharters.com!
Good luck, God Bless and thank you for your service.

Seward Rec Camp (Air Force) or Seward Resort (Army)any DOD can stay at either. The AF camp has cabins for rent that have indoor plumbing, and very nice accommodations. If you are on Active Duty in February you can make reservations ahead of retiree's and other folks. Contact JBER Services http://www.elmendorf-richardson.com/. The Army Resort used to have fishing charters. They were very reasonable and had great fishing when I went.
Homer is a great place to fish too. Also Deep Creek/Anchor Point has lots of charters and lodging available. Good luck on making your trip happen.
