Q:
I fillleted a smallmouth and there are some little black dots scattered in the flesh. Is it safe to eat? They don't look like parasites, but I can't tell what they are.

It is a harmless parasite. Just cook the meat good.

We get em like that all the time. Someone told me they were mollusks, not sure if he was right. Hopefully someone can shed a little more light for us.

Cook them and you'll be fine. I've seen blood vessels show up the same way in fish fillets as well.

I'm glad you asked this. I recently had to fillet a large mouth that ended up gut hooked. There are these sort of black veins running through the meat, and I didn't know if its safe to eat or not.

Those seem to be flukes, they live on and around weeds, until a fish swims by, next time, try looking at the tail also, usually there will be black specks on the tail also. Panfish and fish that feed on vegetation keep the fluke habitat small and the fish fluke free. I believe they are harmless, all I know them to do is stunt a fishes growth.
