Q:
I know bass like to spawn on hard bottoms. But what if you are fishing in a smaller body of water like a farm pond or something with mostly just muddy silty bottoms? I know there is big fish in there because I have caught them but as always I would like to fish more effectively in these ponds. They have to spawn somewhere.

bass will also make beds on sandy bottoms and weeds.
One thing that will greatl inprove your fishing is creating bed sites. It is not rocket science, you just go out and get some gravel and put it in a certain area in a spot that you can easily fish. I have done this several times and it never fails.
Weed beds are where you'll find most bass beds unless you have a spring fed water flow that keeps the current moving and then rock rubble and sand is where they will be. Jamesti has it right, sand & weeds coming together would be ideal in a pond perferably close by some type of flow even if it's an aireator
Usually I find spawning beds along the edges in the weeds where the water is about 2 to 3 feet deep. I am sure that is not a hard fast rule but I find them there quite frequently.
