Q:
We are doing some tip up fishing right now on the backwaters. We catch bass and northern pike. One guy I fish with uses mono for his leaders instead of steel. It seems to get more bites but the pike cut it pretty easy. Is there something else we can use that would be a good compromise?

Creswell's advice is best. In the winter, pike will often cruise up and look at the bait for several minutes and then suck it in. The flourocarbon will help disguise the heavier leader. Often times a steel leader will tip them off and they won't bite.

If they are smaller pike, stick to mono. For those big ones, though, it is worth it to use steel.
