I had to buy all new gear, which costs a fortune, so I started by buying a couple combo rod/reels from BASS Pro. Even the less expensive stuff is good. Look at the reviews from people that have bought that piece of gear.
Pflueger or ABU Garcia make great baitcasters and Zebco and Rhino make great spincasters. Also St.croix and Gander mtn. make the best poles. Put Berkley Fireline or spider wire on the reels. After buying this gear ya might want a bigger livewell!
Abu-Garcia Reels and combo are pretty good setups for baitcasters and spinning combos.
Shimano makes a good spinning combo as well
Recently I purchased a Gander Mountain Guide series spinning reel and so far for the price it has handled ruff conditions and the drag system really holds up well, this is the first time I purchased one of their reels.
I got the Pflueger Trion IM-8 rod with a spinning Trion GX-7 reel which I find to be great. I got it at Gander Mountain as a combo for I believe only 60 bucks which isn't bad either.
Also nice that I believe it comes with a 3 or 5 year warranty. Sorry I'm not sure how long it is, I just remember being quite happy it came with that. For the price I'd say this is a great combo.
1)Bait-casters- Abu Garcia/Ugly Stick rods
2)Spin-casters- Abu Garcia(cardnal)/Ugly Stick.
What can I say "lifetime Warr." and thet "just don't break."

i recommend scheels rods and reels. they are half the money as g. loomis but perform just as well and still carry a lifetime warranty.

I have a new Capricorn Spinner that I am very pleased with. A little pricy, but well worth it.
