Q:
The other night I had a nice bass on, brought him in and he was still pretty green when he got to me so I let off a bit so he would make another run. He took off again but then he took a 3rd jump and spit my hook. So, I'm going to have to get a net so that doesn't happen again. Does anybody have any suggestions on those little hand nets, trout nets or whatever you want to call 'em.

As a fan of ultra-light tackle, I have always used a landing net. I groan when I watch TV fishing shows where the fisherman horses the fish out of the water and into the boat suspended by the line.

Yeah but do you use a cheapo or did you shell out the 30+ bucks for a rubber one. I mean I was looking at this one $10 one from cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Fishing-Accessories/Nets-Wading-Staffs-Creels|/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104339880/i/103892580/Cabelas-Wooden-Catch-And-Release-Nets/732351.uts?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104793480%3Bcat104721480%3Bcat104339880%3Bcat103892580

but they have some on there that range up to like $70. Which is outrageous...but I might shell out $30 or so if the rubber gear is far superior or something. I've really never used a rubber one but they seem to be all the rage.

Spend the 30 dollars on a rubber net one, the first time using my nylon net i had to cut it to pieces get the hooks out of it. i now have a rubber one, and it is completely worth the money. i cannot explain to you how much better the rubber net is.

The net doesn't break down and get stiff in a year or two?

I don't really use a net but i do have a rubber net for trout fishing and the hooks don't get caught up as bad as nylon does. When I have a fish that feels like it is going to jump I lower my rod tip sometimes even in the water. That will help keep resistance on the hook and keep it in the mouth. It does not always work but I have boated more fish that way. Maybe try that and see what happens

For me, a net is too much of a pain in the rear for bass fishing. I prefer to keep a tight line and grasp them by the lip as I gently hold their mouth out of the water. I would also recommend sharpening your hooks so they penetrate well. I generally release bass and don't want to harm them either. For eating, I don't mind losing one out a thousand if it happens.

Tournament fishermen do jerk them out because their paycheck is on the line. Their line is heavy enough to stand the shock and it lets them get their hook back in the water quickly with minimal damage to the fish they are releasing.

Try the Rapala Lock n Grip with the digital scale. They didn't make this when I bought the Rapala Lock n Weigh and this works great for me. You won't use a net again if you have one of these - you can control them, get the hook out, dunk them back into the water and release them with little to no contact.

I like to use an ove' glove to land bass. the rubber makes it easy to grab with my arthritis!

Thanks to all those who commented...I finally broke down and got a rubber net. Hopefully I'll get to use it this week, like DakotaMan I'm wondering how much of a hassle it will be to carry. I'll see, its too cumbersome I might try out those last two suggestions.
