Q:
How bad were your first flies? Mine looked like nymphs with eating disorders. Some were too skinny, some were way too fat. But I had fun and learned. Believe it or not, some of them actually caught fish.

My first one looked so good it actually crawled out of my fly box.
My first fly was so ugly my cat tried to bury it.
A friend of mine was going Steelhead fishing & waited till the last minute to start tieing & talked me into helping him tie up some Spring Wigglers. Those were some darn awful loooking first few. They did start lookin better the more I tied though.
Sayfu, why am I not surprised. My first nymph looked like it should have stayed in my fly box. It was so ugly it had to sneak up on the fish.
buckhunter, when I was a kid I left a minnow on the hook when we came back from fishing. My cat ate the minnow and got the hook stuck in it's mouth. My mom had to pay the vet to remove it. The vet was a fisherman and he made a few jokes to lighten the mood, said something about no more catfishing or something.
Furbuster, did you catch any steelhead on them?
mine were horrible! i don't show them to anyone but keep them to see how far i've come.
ftff, did you get any flies from the swap?
jamesti, I haven't received anything from rdorman in the mail yet. As soon as I do I'll let you and Hoski know. I'm looking forward to seeing what you and Hoski tied up.
he may be waiting for someone else to send their flies. was it just you, me, hoski, and rdorman? i'm still waiting for the last set of flies for another fly swap so i can get them sent to everyone. feel free to blast me on my flies. i can handle it.
Jamesti, if you want feedback I'll be glad to provide it. Tell me what you think of mine too. Don't hold back.
Me? I'm a sensetive guy, don't tell me how bad mine are...I'll have a complex....NOT!
Some of my first flies were so bad I just took the exacto knife to em and started over, went through some material. After awhile they got looking better, then a poster on these threads pointed out that they don't neccessarily need to impress us, they need to impress the fish. He said to go ahead and throw em because even what we think are ugly might acctually look "buggy" to the fish.
good point, hoski. and i know better than to think you are the sensitive type.
Jamesti and hoski, please contact me. flytieflyfish@yahoo.com.
Jamesti, I am the warm and fuzzy type, honest.
Really though, all critisism will be appreciated.
Hoski, it makes sense to try your bad flies to see if they will catch fish. I saw a Jack Dennis video where he said you should always fish your bad cast. I've made bad casts plenty of times. A few times I was lucky enough to catch a fish on those casts. By the way, when you get my flies please give me your opinion on how I can improve them. I'm glad to hear any criticism because I'm always trying to get better. I appreciate any advice you have.
Flytieflyfish, same goes for me when you get the flies.
I tried sending you an e-mail last night...it came back this morning as undeliverable, what's up?
You can get me at flyswap@yahoo.com
some looked good and others were horrible it was kind of a hit or miss for me
As for the ugly ones, just tell everybody they're your new killer emerger patterns. Like Hoski, I use a razor blade(ouch)to hack the material off the hook ifn' I don't like it. I'd posted-awhile ago-that I'd be interested in participating in a fly swap. Keep me in mind for future swaps. And I've heard that Sayfu's flies were so damm good that he once made Scott Sanchez cry tears of envy.
Backcast, for some reason my flytieflyfish@yahoo.com email address is acting up. I'll have to find another way to get you involved in a swap. Sorry for now.
My first few were so bad that they'd just kind of fall apart when they got wet. Luckily they don't have that problem any more, but I sure had fun getting it all figured out.
