you really should put this in the fishing section if you want answers.
Having the weight below the shank will make a fly ride right side up in the water.
Also, a good knot to tie for turned down eyes is the George Harvey dry fly knot. When tied correctly your fly will be straight with your tippet.
i've heard that aerodynamics can be blamed, i remember hearing somewhere that flies with straight eyes in line with the hook don't land properly on the water... dont mark me minus if you think its bull, dont shoot the messenger
