I was probably 12 or so. I started tying my own flies. Never caught anything and ran out of time so I gave it up. Last week I was in Florida and actually started again. I have fun just being out by the water.
I was ten. My brother and I each got outfits for Christmas 1962. Remember it like it was yesterday. I have re-wrapped that rod twice. It's not much by today's standards but sure caught a lot of fish with it.
OH the best gear is the gear you cherish most. I would rather take out a family members rifle/shot gun that they used to cherish and never hit a thing than take out a $1,500 gun I bought on a whim and have no connection with.
Another thing on my mind........
Even entry level gear can far exceed the abilities of those using it. It may just take more time to be good with it.
Hello 13 year old dee, first of all Congratulations on your first fly rod outfit. I myself was 8 years old when my dad first took me fly fishing. He did most of the casting back then, but he would let me do a few of the cast and taught me my basic casting stroke. I remember those days like they were yesterday like so many others here. I love fly fishing, I feel close to both God and myself when I am out on the water and in my element. My fishing time allows me to think of my life and reflect on how lucky I have been through out it. My troubles don't seem so terrible at the end of the day as I have totally submersed myself in my efforts on the water. I hope that you find as much enjoyment out of your new outfit and have many great adventures in the sport of fly fishing ahead. Don't get discouraged by little setbacks as these are natural for everybody, even the best in the world had to start somewhere. And finally don't be afraid to go into a local flyshop every chance you get and ask lots of questions and get as much information as you can. Tight Lines to you 13 year old dee.
when i was about 12 o so many years ago haha "bout 6 years to be exact" i bout a shackspear fly set from wal mart. It was 20 dollars and i was so exited i ran inside to show my dad it was obviouly put together and stuck it in the ceiling fan, it broke and I was horrified because it hadent even seen the water yet. My dad fixed it for me and i havent to this day caught more fish on any other rod iv got.
