I don't think any of us have been around that long to remember, but it is entirely possible that some early fisherman, before the discovery of live bait, was casting a bare hook, which impaled some poor fly on the wing, and thus accidentally matched the hatch perfectly.
Well, it is possible:)
Im curious about the exact same thing it has a rather intricate set of tactics the tyeing of flys is deeply rooted with entomology. I think the intricacies are a testament to many of the smart scientific people who have developed the tactic throughout centuries. I think many of the great spin casting lures were founded and developed through fly fishing flys.
Wikipedia (not an academic source I know just a quick search) says it was first recorded being used by the romans in the 2nd century and that many civilizations make reference to using it and developing it throughout the years. I think i might look into this further thank you for sparking the interest.
Actually fly fishing was invented by an enterprising entrepreneur who envisioned the wealth that could be obtained by inventing a consumer sport, selling everything from sun glasses to nail clippers.
I have read that it had been around for centuries before Christ. Ancient man was way more intelligent than we tend to give him credit for, so it doesn't surprise me that they came up with it. They were probably better then us at it too.
Alright so did some research and the earliest account of fly fishing was when Claudius Aelianus observed Macedonian anglers casting a hook covered in red wool and feathers. What a fun fact!:)
Not sure we know exactly when or by who it started. Its been around since the Romans at least. Pretty sure fly-fishing as we know it evolved on the rivers and streams in the UK.

Someone watched a bug fall in the water, then saw a fish rise to eat the bug and said I can tie a bug with feather or hair and make my own bugs.

I am going to guess and say the Japanese started the sport after discovering a hand tied fly of feathers and yarn worked better than a real bug.

I think the flyfishing we do here mostly has roots in Scotland.
Flyfishing started when a caveman got tired of licking his fingers, after putting worms on the hook.
