I lived there for decades and I never saw anybody with fly fishing gear.

We used to fish the shorebreak with fresh-caught Sand Fleas and caught pompanos.

Doesn't get any better than that.

But I understand the pompanos have gotten scarce.

If you must fish like that, get a small boat and fish in the surf when schools of Mackerels are in close.

A small yellow wet fly is all that is necessary, as it is a feeding frenzy when they're in close.

Stay out of the water, as there is no shortage of Barracudas there.

I have caught mackeral and pompano off the beach near there. I used a Lefty Deceiver with sinking line and a stripping basket. The bite stopped at sun up.

Amen on the pompano! Good fish to surf fish for, but are very, very scarce. It is hard to find a place to fish from the beach these days because of all the development along it. Blackdawgz is right about getting in a boat.

I envy y'all. The first three posts describing the fishery at Destin reminds me to travel there and go for the red fish. There have been several TV sport fishing shows documenting this fishery as one prime for fly rods, big healthy fish with lots of fight with a black dot on the upside of the tail, all from a boat. The guide and his clients used Clousers and, as buck mentioned, Deceivers, all tied with a high back, imitating small fish with body mass. Can't wait.
