Q:
For salmon and trout in alaska, what size leaders and tippets do I need? Can I just buy spools of flouro and work from there or no?

Alot of flyfishers use store bought taper leaders because they don't like knots in their line. I used to use them but now I tie all my own leaders & have had great results. The only things I have found with flouro is it sinks faster than mono & it doesn't streatch as much that's why I use mono to start my leaders & finish off with flouro. The size depends on what size fish you are chatching. I use 10 lbs tippet on Salmon in Michigan but the Kings are bigger in Alaska. Good luck, wish I was going up there.

use mono for your leader and go heavy. it's not unusual to hook up with a 30 pound king and many times bigger. my first fish in alaska was a 45lb king. glad it wasn't on fly gear.
