My favorite brookie lure(when not fly fishing) is a 1/3 oz "Little Cleo" spoon in silver/crimson.Caught an 18" and 16" brookie with it this year.

Take some nightcrawlers along.
Take a camera. Are they in their spawning colors about now?
Brooktrout I've caught hide and pounce, swallowing live bait. If you use it, minimize undesired kill by bending down the barb.
