I bounce around between orvis, ll bean, and cabelas. Flies that I don't tie myself I order over http://www.blueflycafe.com/..If they don't have a certain fly that works well on a certain river well It is good to support the local fly shop.. Keep an eye out on all of the webpages..I wanted an orvis superfine troutbum for the longest..a few years ago they redesigned the model and the other ones were on sale. I jumped on it and saved alot of money on a great flyrod..So the best thing is to really keep an eye out and maybe wait a little until you find a nice deal
Perhaps I shouldn't give away my secrets, but since you are friends ... if you like Orvis gear, try their outlet shop in Manchester, VT. Never know what you will find. I have even called, describing what I was looking for to see if they have it in stock.
Definitely ebay. I have bought flies, leaders, and reels all at great prices. Even brand new ones. It is definitely worth a look before you buy from one of the larger stores such as cabelas or bass pro.
Remember that part of a good deal can be dealing with a local dealer. It can be a big box store, doesn't have to be a fly shop. For me, it is the satisfaction of knowing that if something doesn't work, and needs to be returned they can help me with it, provide an across the counter guarantee maybe, get me an address, or a box to send it back in, or they may do it.
We have a Sportsman's Warehouse in my town that provides good prices and serves, but there are others that will provide service, and decent pricing as well.
