I have an old friend who uses trotlines for catfish, and usually with great success. It always seemed to be more like trapping than fishing to me, so there is not much sport in it.

I used to quite a bit. It became a lot of work, and I was catching more fish than I could ever hope to eat.

I know that my Dad and my Grandfather used them and always caught fish.

Yeah i got to use them on a visit to Texas lake courpus cristi. It was very effective, caught two big snapping turtle's, not fun to get off a hook. Got 31lb blue and several smaller ones while there for a week. One of the best eating fish, ive had. (not much compares to steelehead and salmon) but prepared with good cajun and several other recipe's.

I use trot lines and limb lines. Not at the same time, that is a lot of work. Most of the time we will set our trot lines out or limb lines and then bank fish. About every hour we troll up the banks and see if we have anything on the lines and rebait our hooks. Very effective way to cover water and is a lot of fun.
