I would think a carp is your most likely suspect. It would be big enough to snap your 10lb test. Plus line is usually the weakest right in front of the know like you described. Because that's where we pull the knot tight and it strains just enough of the line on the spot to weaken it a little. Then you get a big fish, set the hook, and it's over. Up your test to 20-30lb and then repeat your fishing method, or atleast use a 20lb leader or heavier. Let us know what it was when you get it in. Good luck...

You might have to lighten it then and let it run, especially if you use 10lb test with a heavier leader. Take your time and ease it in.

It sounds like a bad combination of a big fish and a bad knot. 10 pound mono will break at less than a pound of pull if the knot has cracked the line and this is very common. I suggest you test each knot you tie making sure that a knot will hold at least 10 pounds of weight without breaking. Lick the knot and put some saliva on it before you snug the knot down. That lubricant really increases the chance for a good knot. I test every knot I tie and I have to re-tie a lot of them but I rarely have a fish break them.

Sounds like carp, which in your area easily exceed 30-40 lbs. 20 or 30 lb test and a properly set drag should bring in your culprit. Try an Eye Crosser knot or a modified San Diego Jam knot (modified is going through the hook eye twice). Both of these knots are up around 95% of line test poundage. Post a picture when you catch the beast!

Your line didn't break. Your knot gave away.
