Yep,it was a bluegill and it was that big.It broke the tip of his rod off when he caught it.He caught in a little pond where we live. There's not many in there,so I guess they get a chance to grow.Dad caught a little one the other day.
16" Bluegill if measured after being run over by a steamroller would be considered smalless and quit thin. 10" alive would be pretty big 14" would be hugh, 16" would be a GIANT or a Bass wearing Bluegill skin in disquise
It is actually possible to have a sixteen inch bluegill, but not very likely. The world record for big bluegill caught on hook and line was set more than sixty years ago at around 4 pounds and 12 onces. It was mounted using the only blank available at the time that was simular enough to pass for the big bluegill, but that blank was 16 inches long and for a completely different species fish. But the real fish was at least an inch or more shorter than the blank according to what I have read. There have been reports of bluegill coming out of breeding ponds that where almost 1/2 pound heavier than the world record, but were not qualified as record fish because they were not caught on hook and line, and even being heavier than the world record, still were only about 15 inches. So it could be possible to have a 16 inch bluegill, but it probably would weigh much, more than five pounds and would be a new world record. World records for pan fish are mostly determined by weight.
Maybe I measured it wrong.I measured from the tip of it's tail to the tip of it's nose, not how thick it was.I think it was something like 1 and a half or 2 inches thick.
Isn't there someone in the south who was feeding bluegill a special diet at his fish hatchery and claims to have world record fish? Thought I saw that on the discovery channel or something? Maybe not?
The records I looked up listed the top fish at 4 lbs plus but showed no length. The next best fish was 3 lbs 15 7/8 ozs. It gave a length of 15.75". The pictures I found were awesome showing 4 and 5 lb crappie!

A 16" bluegill is a "whomper stomper! Take some pics and get him to a certified scale before he dries out!
P.S. - Any grocery store with a scale! ...and get somebody to witness weighing and their name. Get the weight in writing! Good luck!
Thanks, but it's a little too late for that.It was caught by a friend last summer.
Bubba's right, that would be the grandaddy of all bluegills. I've never caught one much bigger than my hand.
There ain't no such animal.
I could believe a 16-inch circumference.
a monster! i've never seen one that big!
are you sure it was a bluegill?? if it was...WOW...
thats called huge.
Just turn your ruler over from the centimeter scale and then re-read in inches.

The link isn't for a bluegill but is for a similar species...
