Q:
Hello all. My department is sending me to Charleston, WV the 18th of October and I noticed that my hotel is right by the Kanawha River where the Elk River meets. Not being from the area, what kind of fishing can I expect in that area? Also, any hints on bait and tackle would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help,

I live about an hour away and have yet to fish in the fish in the elk. But I have heard only good things about it. A friend of my mothers has a camp on the upper Elk and fly fishes for trout and smallmouth. Many nice muskies have been caught there too. The lower part by Charleston has your usually river fish, black bass, cats, carp, etc. The Kanawaha has the same minus the trout. I live where the Kanawha and Ohio meet and have seen many 50+ pound flatheads pulled out of the two rivers. I will research more tonight and have a better answer later. Welcome to WV!
Also the lower part of the river near Charleston has walleyes. I would assume most live baits would work great in the lower portion or maybe try walleye jigs. Spoons or deep diving lures are sure to get some attention. If you want to take a trip for a few hours you could try the tributaries Big Spring Fork and the Old Field Fork. The Elk actually flows underground for about 6 miles so I would not recommend trying to float down it.
Thank you for the help. I am looking forward to trying some new water.
Archery season comes in the 17th as well here in case your interested. Out of state license cost about $125 for hunting, annual non-resident fishing license is $35, trout stamp is an additional $15.
