Q:
Q: I feel like I'm out of my leauge here :( I bought a spinning reel (Browning Citori) but I can't get it set up. When I bought it from Bass Pro they put on 8 lb. line on the one reel which was kept from unwinding by a small clip on the reel. I tried to run the line up through the guides on the reel but ended up with a mess. Grrr... this is really frustrating - what's the trick to setting this up? Thanks!

The reel must have been one that was wound a long time ago....old inventory. The line will develop a memory and make it very difficult to fish with. Even if you got it through the guides, almost every time you cast, you will get a birds nest, even though it isn't a bait caster. I would either take it back and exchange it for one that possibly hasn't sat ont he shelf for a while, or take all of the line off and spool it yourself. 8lb test isn't that expensive, and it will give you confidence in your gear. Best of luck.

If the line is coiling really badly immediately off the reel, I would definitely go with RobinHood's advice.

Another thing that I usually do with any reel/rod I'm setting up is to only let off enough line to reach to the end of the rod plus a few feet. At that point, flip the bail over to keep more from coming out. You never want to leave an open bail while you are pulling out line with no tension - it will greatly increase the odds of "bird nesting". Also, if you do get tangled up, it's only a short section of line and not half the spool.

sounds like it could be over filled and pulling off in a mess. the spool should not be filled al the way to the edge of the spool. the string should only be 1/16 to 1/8 " from the edge. make sure the spool clip is no longer catching the line, bail should be open then thread slack line thru eyes. If the line is still coming off wrong it could be wound wrong. best way to fix this is to feed out line( nothing attached ) off the bak of a boat while motoring slow. When all line is out retreave and it should be fixed.

The shop may have installed your line backwards or twisted.

Do this. Loosen your drag so you can pull line out easily while still keeping pressure on your line so it will not unravel. Run your line through the eyes. At this point, keeping pressure on the line at the bail so it does not unravel, tie on a weight. At this point hold the rod in front of you and place your finger on the spool holding the line. Open the bail and pull line out from under your finger. Pull out approximately 10 feet of line. If the line twist then it was installed wrong.

Also check to make sure the spool is big enough for 8lb test. After that make sure you do not have too much line on the spool. You should leave 1/8 inch of spool showing.

Put a rubber band around reel spooled line - soak the reel spool in water over night - i do this with all my spools that were just filled with new line (takes out the memory)!

If that does not work the line was probably spooled wrong. OR pre-spooled with not very good line - or the reel you purchase with line has sat on shelf TO LONG.

Remove the reel line 1/2 way through the reel spool - purchase new line - tie together the remaining reel spool line with the new purchased spool -lay purchased spool flat on a floor - reel in line through a piece of cotton (with a little tension - cotton will remove line powders that can build up) after several fills on the reel - flip over purchased line spool -- and fill to 1/16th to 1/8th of the reel spool edge - the line coming off the purchased spool and going on the reel spool - IS EXACTLY how it will be cast.

DO NOT spend money to have LINE PUT ON A spinning spool anywhere that does it by machine!!!!! it will end up in most cases like a slinky!
