As with anything, it specific to the type of fish and location, but if I had to pick one lure and one technique for everything, it would be a 1/4oz Shad pattern Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap on a slow, steady retrieve along cover. Not the most exciting for bass, but very effective for many species in many different environments.
Any topwater lure, seeing tht fish blow up on a topwater is just so exciting, a double rush you see the attack then set the hook and there is no way of knowing if it's a 10oz or 10lb monster. I throw super spook jrs, jitterbugs and buzz baits and in that order 1st thing in the morning or at night. Same on salt water but with bigger lures.

I like to use topwater lures. when the fish hits your lure you just get a big rush.
