I'm addressing this to an older group. To another time and place when there was such a thing as Trash Fish. Something you wouldn't think of cleaning and cooking. Fast forward today when a change of name made something desirable. Angler fish became Monk fish, Blow fish became Chicken of the Sea Skate became fake Scallops. Common Carp, Long Nose Gar and Bren have been processed into something else. I even saw a show were Snake heads were caught and barbecued. Now I know times and tastes change and we are all different. My dad couldn't eat Eel's after seeing a body removed from a river following a logging accident. As a child we would fish for Flounder using squid for bait. My dad mused that why no one ever thought to cook such a nice piece of white meat. Yeah maybe if you bought me a Schwinn was my thought. Now it's Calamari and found in any sea food joint. Giant Tuna were sold as cat food and we all know how that turned out. Lobter that large sea bug was feed to the poor. OK Here's the question; Do you think America should change it's eating habits to combat Invasive Species. Is Snake head on the menu and the simple answer is "Shut Up and eat your Broccoli"

Indeed it is. I once worked at a fish packing house on the Outer Banks, and a big percentage of the fish were seperated out as crab trap bait- 8 cents a pound. We were allowed to take whatever we wanted out of those boxes. Blowfish- (chicken of the sea) we cut a bunch of those everyday, and flash fried them back at home over a Coleman stove. Croakers, man, the best. I still love them. All kinds of weird fish, even pinfish. We drew the line at sea robins.

Our boss, who was a good guy, found a market among the Asians for cuttlassfish, and A vietnamese woman would come twice a week to collect them, and a bunch of other fish that nobody wanted- even leatherjackets and things like that. Our boss began to think of new names- we had a box of some kind of of silvery, flat looking fish- can't remember what they were called- our boss looked down at them, put his hands on the sides of his head, thinking hard, and said, Yessss! That's it!! those are.....he thought some more... SWEET BUTTER JACKS!!! He slammed the lid on the box,,whipped out a Sharpie and wrote the new name on the lid. The fish went out (this was in the days of all cash midnight transactions at the old Fulton Street Fish Market in NYC.) The box sold out in the first few minutes, and a new market for whatever those little fish were, was born. I never knew what they called the cuttlassfish.

Hal you are so right. Blow fish over ran Long Island. Till we found out it was the easiest fish to clean. Cut the back of the neck out pops a piece of firm white meat with only a center spine. To boot little did my father realize but his little boy would grow up and marry a girl who made Calamari as a Christmas Eve Dish!!!

i'll stick to my favorites unless someone wants to post a good recipe. i've eaten ants, grubs and worms as well as grasshoppers so i guess i shouldn't complain.

I like the concept, but I don't see coyote on the menu any time soon. Especially with broccoli.
Maybe if the countryside becomes overrun with exotics from game farms (like axis deer) and are classified as invasive species, I'll pitch in and do my share, with or without the A1 sauce. Hold the broccoli.

I am a firm believer in what the good Lord has provided us. If we can kill it, we can eat it. If we can't beat them eat them policy. I worked in a fish house over winter a few years. I learned real fast there is more ediable fish and food available if we only turn our head in the right direction. I only limit my tastes to not comsuming Tipoli. Just something about eating from the toilet bowl that won't allow me to put it in my mouth I hate the taste of TP even after being rinsed.

Politically correct trash fish: Formerly squaw fish is now pike minnow. And yes, people are starting to eat them. Ugh! Those things are just plain stinky.

99 I had an uncle who had a brief stay in Korea. Him and his friends had a meal of stewed Dog [and he loved dogs]. But the weather cold and the situation dyer. He did say it was one of the better meals he had, though I doubt he would like to repeat the experience.

Snakehead eats good. AND, since they gobble up young bass & bream, they also make good fertilizer. So if you don't want to eat em, just feed em to next year's tomatoes.

James I'm German [sour lung and heart- head cheese-ox cheeks]; My wife Italian [goats head- calamari-snails]. A lot of ethnic cuisine is based on a BET or really dyer circumstance. I'm sure if we all thought back there might be something to make other people cringe [rabbit meat?]. As far as tastes in foreign countries. I am surprised no one harvested these INVASIVE species and sold them to foreign Gourmets. This has become a world economy and we have to clean [balance] our own back yard.

I think tilapia is what rick had in mind. They are low in mercury but loaded with Omega-6, which is worse for your heart than fatty hamburgers.

I limit my fish to Salom,Tuna,Mullet,Bass,Trout,Walleye, Norther Pike,Marlin,Swordfish,Snapper. Also Lobster,Shrimp and Scallops. (So Far, open to suggestions. (With recipes) ;)

every carp I catch, gets turned into fertilizer for my plants, my garden, etc...other than that, I'll eat most anything that doesn't eat me first. :D
