My favorite is drift fishing with a wooley worm in fast current. I have a pair of 11 1/2 foot noodle rods that I use with 6 pound line and 2 or 4 pound tippets. I drift a small pencil sinker ahead of the fly to keep it on the bottom and wait for them to hit. It is so exciting to see a 15-20 pound steely come flying out of the white water shaking his head. If you keep the rod high and play them right with that rig, you can actually land about one out of four in that 20 mph white water. That is good fun!
My favorite way to catch steelhead is sidedrifting different color flies, I attach pencil lead in rubber tubing and punch swivel to tubing and then put it above so it slides and attach barrel swivel and then 6 to 8 foot leader, I learned this from the guy who started the "Glow Bug" yarn company in N.California 33 years ago and has always served me well, thanks Craig
