Yeah. You can use just braided line. You'll have more break-offs but you can also impart more action on your lures without the wire. Braided would be better than mono because there are multiple strands vs. one for the mono. It'l take more thrashing on the line for pike to brake the line.
With all due respect to the previous post my experience has been that pike will bite through braid with no problems. I use wire leaders if I am fishing exclusively for northerns. In lakes where I am fishing bass but expect to catch the odd northern I use a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. They will bite throught the fluoro once in a while but I have landed some big northern (38"+)on the fluoro. You could go heavier on the fluoro but knots get harder to tie and I think it affects the action as much as light wire leaders so I usually just go to wire.
You can fish with just the braided line but check it after you catch each Pike. After a few fish the braid will start to wear. So you'll have to cut off a few feet of it and retie your line. If your just going for Pike and nothing else I would recommend a leader.
Thanks guys- ive had pike on my line but once, and it snapped my mono right at the boat. This has opened up my eyes. Thanks, and good luck to you all when spring comes.
I use a leader when I'm fishing live bait but as fore mentioned a leader can take away from the action of some lures. Try to keep your rod high and keep the tension on even when he's taking out drag. A pike can cut your line when he jukes, rolls or dives by catching the line in between his teeth by keeping your rod high you'll keep the line from getting in his mouth. Good luck.
there are things you can do with the lure to help with break-offs, then you run the risk of missing more fish...if you are using cheap enough lures to not worry about break-offs go for it with braid...you'd be better off with fluoro however...Most pike/muskie lure put off enough action to overcome the heavy line...snaps help regain a lot of the action...but not all...sometimes less action isn't a bad thing

like chuckles said go with a fluor leader. just heavier than 2o..I favour 50lb plus and never had one break/bite off
I would use a leader as I caught a 7 pounder a couple years ago and right when we got it into the net the 30 pound Spiderwire braid broke.
I guess you could but you would have so many pike get away with your lures it would just be better if you use the wire.

Despite my fishing buddy's advice I use braided with no steel leader and have not had a pike break the line yet.
As mentioned you will have better action and more sensitivity with just the braid.
