I hammer the smallmouth on a single tail dark colored grub on a jig head. Different weights of jig heads for different water speeds. Cast them upstream and jig them down through the current. Seem to have better luck around rocks with faster current.
I love soft plastic grubs, especially curly tail types. I fish them alone on a jig head or on safety pin type spinner rigs. Fish them in various sizes and colors. They are my favorite stream bait. Chartreuse with a red head is a favorite color combo.
I find them very effective for bream, crappie, bass, trout and saltwater fish like speckled trout and redfish. I've even caught flounder and channel catfish on them.
I use berkley Gulp grubs on jigs for walleye, and in some situations they will outfish live bait.Only tip I can think of is dont fish them too quickly, especially in a cold front.Gently lifting the rod 6" and then let the jig drop to the bottom and let it sit for 2 seconds then repeat. Bites seem most often on the drop and can be very light, set the hook at the slightest tap or movement of your line.
