I have never heard of that, but out of curiosity, how deep was the water?

Yes, I've caught many channel cats on spinner baits, rooster tails, grubs and crank baits. They feed on quite a bit of live bait and will strike a lure in a heartbeat.

Yes, and I've caught quite a few on Rapalas. I even caught one on a popping bug while fishing for bream.

Yep, about 35yrs ago my then father in law caught a 25lb. channel in a pay lake in very early springtime using a spinner. BTW, that thing was full of fat and tasted like crap.

Channel cats hunt the top water for anything that moves. Therefore, it is pretty common to catch them with spinner baits and lures. I have caught lots of them on a variety of surface lures but I will tell you, my most effective channel cat bait has been a baby frog drifted down the current with no weight. Just hook it in the lower lip with a small strong hook and let it drift/swim. They don't swim too far in channel cat territory.

He was in shallow water. Around 5 foot of water. He wasn't a channel cat either. He was fishing a local pond.
