For the big cats you should go with a small live bream, they wont live bait. If your goin after somethin smaller and a lot more bites cut bait or chicken livers works really well.

Shad make great bait in most reservoirs and many rivers, because they are prevalent natural forage......
Chicken Livers.......No bait is more closely associated with catfishing than a chicken liver...... The reason is simple: livers produce catfish and lots of them..... With their strong, meaty smell, chicken livers draw cats from broad areas...... Once the cats find the bait, they have trouble resisting them......
Fresh crawfish, whether dead or alive, work great for putting cats in the boat whether they are placed atop rocky points or humps on summer nights, or fished in the deeper open water along the edge of a grass bed........

You are going to get so many different answers to this it's not even funny, but my personal favorite is night crawlers. The fun thing about those is, everything eats them. I catch bass, cats, and the occasional pickerel.

I can't believe nobody said HOT DOGS yet! Cheap and easy to get. On the other hand, chicken livers and worms are probably cheaper. But who doesn't have a freezer burnt package of hot dogs in the ice box?

I like shrimp. We had a couple packages of freezer burnt shrimp. I took them fishing at the neighbors pond and caught some big bass and a catfish, 27".

I have done a lot of Catfishing my self, and have had great luck with nightcrawlers. I tried some "stinkbait", but have had no luck in doing so.

I fish mostly tailrace waters on the mississippi and shad or skip jack (live or cut) work best.

I heard of folks using Ivory soap to catch em...

First find out what the local cuisine is, by that I mean find out what the prime food source is in the area.

For instance in my local catfish lake the prime bait is shad, I catch them in my cast net and then use live and cut shad to catch the majority of my catfish.

Other baits included: beef liver, beef heart, shrimp, perch or bream cut or live, stink bait.

Good Luck

Large chunks of mackerel or anchovy. Fresh if possible, frozen if not. The oil seems to attract them. "Flylne" the chunks - single 4/0 hook on the end of the line, no sinker. Big cats will sense a weight and drop the bait. Leave a little slack in the line, and set the hook after the fish as moved a few feet.

CATFISH WILL EAT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING, AS THE PREVIOUS ANSWERS EASILY SPELL OUT. LIVE BREAM IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS YOU CAN GET BUT CHECK LOCAL LAWS FIRST, IN FLORIDA LIVE BREAM ON A POLE OR ROD & REEL IS FINE, BUT ILLEGAL ON SET HOOKS OR TROT LINE, EITHER LIVE OR CUT. LIVE BAIT IS HARD TO BEAT BUT WHEN USING CUT BAIT THE FRESHER THE BETTER. PREPARED STINKBAIT JUST DON'T WORK AS GOOD AS LIVE OR FRESH CUT BAIT

As dwaynez posted, use the bait fish in the water you are fishing. Shad, skipjack herring, bream, salamanders and eel are all good baits. So are goldfish, shiners, nightcrawlers, livers, frogs, crawfish, fresh water mussels and even small catfish. If you're fishing for big flatheads go with live bait. Blues and channels will eat live bait, cut bait, stinkbait or any of the above. Stinkbait works best in ponds, small lakes and rivers with slow current. Hope this helps you. Happy fishing!
