When the Steelhead come in to shore it's a good bet the smelt are in. Usually the last week of March starts bringing them in in the great lakes. Our best weekends have been around the 9th of April on Erie,Huron & Michigan..these include small creeks and inlets.Water temp controls the spawning action, but the dates have always been close.
Well, after checking the DNR website apparently we are only allowed 2 gallons of smelt per person due to the fact that they are mainly spawning in the shoals.
They are not running like they used to in rivers for this reason. Cormorants probably have diminished the schools quite a bit as well.

It's about that time of year here in Michigan as well. I'm hoping to get up north in the next couple weeks to fill up a few coolers.

Where in Wisconsin? In Algoma and Kewaunee it's usually early to mid April. This year however, could be earlier.
dleurquin, We usually go in Ashland. Mid april too, but now were wondering if we should go up early because of the weather...
In Maine, when the peepers start noise making, the smelts start running, both the fresh and salt water runs. Should be anytime now here.
