Q:
I live in the midwest and I am looking for a hand-forged fishing gig. I know in southern Missouri gigging for sucker fish is popular in the late fall/winter. I have looked on the internet but cannot find anyone that sells them. I could buy a big one in the store but they are not nearly as heavy and they are constructed differently. Any suggestions?

Whats the reason for gigging for suckers? If you have a Gander Mtn., BPS, or Cabelas close go there they will have them there. They don't show everything on their websites so don't just right them off.

A good, heavy gig can easily be made from an appropriate sized U-bolt, with the aid of a grinder, to sharpen the points, and a welder to affix a prong to the back side to fasten it on a pole. Or, add a piece of all thread down the middle for a three prong gig. The threads on the U-bolt and all thread act as effective barbs.
