use worms the old fashioned worms and sliding sinker with a split-shot to keep it from sliding up to the hook. Power bait is also good just with a split-shot tho.
Sorry it should say used fake minnows. This is what I use but I live Ohio. I don't think it makes a difference though. Minnows and worms work the best for me.

I would mainly use minnows, but also worms like Mc. Squizzy said.
You will have best luck with the worms i would say but small minnows would work very well also.
i have always used minnows for crappie. They do bite on worms also. I have osed foak minnows as well and they seem to work well.
