I would recommend Cass lake or Leech Lake. A couple of nice resorts would be Wishbone Resort or Sah Kah Tay Beach Resort, both on Cass. I would also recommend hiring a guide for a day to learn the lake.

Vermillion and Lake of the Woods are two other good ones.
If you are looking for backcountry adventure then the Boundary Waters are hard to beat. After the fire goes out.
If you want to stay closer to civilization then Mille Lacs lake has big walleye, big muskie and big smallmouth all in the same lake with lots of places to stay and bars etc.

I agree with DSMbirddog about Leech Lake in northern Minnesota. I caught a 36" pike there a few years ago in September of the year.

I'd take Minnesota between these two for northerns and the guys above have pointed out fine locations. I personally prefer driving a little further north into Manitoba where you might find more big fish.
