Q:
I read the keys kayak experiment in dec./jan issue and I am heading to the keys soon, seems the author used mostly shrimp, is there any use in me taking along some spinners and spoons maybe a couple plugs?

I have never used anything but cut bait of some kind down there, and never wished for anything else. I still haul my whole box everytime I go, but I never use it.
If it swims, it'll take a spoon. Lures in general will work in salt as well as fresh water. Just a question of getting the size and colors right for the water and target species.
You can catch fish on artificials, but you will have better luck with live bait---lots better.
dont hesitate to try anything.
I agree with country. He has plenty of experience saltwater fishing and knows what he is talking about.
I'm betting you will see five to six foot long tarpon cruising around you. You will be happy to have some nice live bait with you when that happens. They will hit artificials (my favorite is a heavy tarpon fly that I cast with my spinning rod) but not nearly as well as live bait.
Thanks guys, I reread the article, and your advice, Im on the way to my local tackle shop for size 1/0 to 4/0 circle hooks, split shot, and some quality swivels. Im still going to take just a couple artificials for a quick cast or two from the resort docks. Wish me luck I've been waiting for this trip since December, p.s. its part of 25th wedding anniversary, I got a good girl, we are going to do a guided kayak fishing trip and party in the keys!!!
Motorcycledave, just remember that circle hooks like the ones required when fishing the Keys, will set themselves. You do not have to rare back and set the hook like when using "J" hooks. As a matter of fact, trying to set them hard may even pull them out of the fish's mouth prematurely. And congradulations on making it 25 years. I hope both you and your better half enjoy the trip. My wife just loved Key West and getting to experience the waterfront sunset celebration then afterwards going to Margaritaville.
