Q:
Thinking about doing some deep see fishing in California this year. Any advice on good guides or how to go about finding what I need. I don't plan on buying gear just renting, but I want to use a guide that is credible, but not outrageously priced.

Not sure if you are heading to North, Central or Southern California but if it's Southern California I would check out Dana Point or San Diego. The way I have chosen boats is to spend an afternoon at the landing and ask the people coming off of the boat. Also tackle shops are good places to check.

Although, that's assuming you are in the area to check ahead of time. If you do a google search for places, check to see if they have any reviews on yelp or another independent site. If someone had a bad trip, they will post it.

@ sdstewart, Thanks a ton. I will be in San Diego, and not looking forward to going to California for vacation again this year. I really wanted to stay home and fish and camp this year, but we are having a family reunion this year. That means I have to go too. I plan on making the most out of it, and fishing would be it.
