I am going to guess that it's Richard from Moby, as in Jones from Indiana.

99; you got it. The original whale that sank the Essex was sighted at the Mocha Islands. No one knows why Melville change the name. He also wrote his book in the Shadow of Mount Graylock in Mass.. The tallest mountain on the eastern part of the US [3500ft]. The Whale was often referred to land where there was none. Great place for a hike. On a clear day you can see into five state.

PS There is a hotel on the summit now. No such a thing when Dad thought it was a good character build walk; in my youth.

Ishmael dates to Abraham and Shara. Shara was barren so she gave her handmaiden to lye with Abraham. They had a son called Ishmael. God was so pleased that he gave Shara six sons. They started the seven tribes of Israel. The crux of the story is that Ishmael who was the eldest would [by tradition] be the sole inheritor of his fathers estate. But being illegitimate had to seek his own fortune in the world.

If memory serves me, the name of Ishmael, the sole survivor, translates in Hebrew to "man of God". There are a great many Biblical references in Melville's book.

When you think of it, if they took some of the Biblical carriers and simply gave them a house in the suburbs and a business suit, their stories would still make a great book or movie.
