Q:
Re:Chimp salmon fishing in Wash State. I have asked this before and got many different answers. Does anyone know for sure that if my pet chimp hooks a salmon on Puget Sound while we are fishing from a boat, does he need a fishing license and salmon punch card? His name is Lucky.

If your chimp can catch a salmon in Puget Sound, he must be Lucky.

If his name was Elmer he wouldn't need either; if it were Dwight he'd only need the license. Lucky is, unfortunately, not on the list of names exempt from the license/punch card requirement. Sorry.

I recently asked the Wash. State Dept of Fish & Wildlife about this. their official responce was:

Thank you for contacting the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The chimp cannot be legally licensed to fish. However, I have copied our Enforcement Division to look at whether the chimp’s owner would need to be licensed or what the actual legality is regarding this question.
