Q:
While many folks are getting fired up about hunting season in the not-too-distant future, salt water fishing is just fine here on the Gulf Coast. Went out this morning with friends and we caught our limit of king mackerel by 8:30 (nice ones) and a load of big Spanish mackerel. On the way back in through the pass, we saw two big redfish caught and one doormat of a flounder. Is anyone else taking advantage of the great saltwater fishing this time of year?

It would need to be one heck of a cast for me to reach the coast from the Rockies. When I lived out there I thought that I could never live without the ocean. Don't miss it (or the crowds and traffic) a bit. I did a little fly fishing up the canyon today and had the whole river to myself. Glad to hear of your good fishing.

Sounds like a great day and it makes me wish I could get out. I did a lot of that fishing when I lived in Jacksonville and I still miss it. Congrats on a nice day... you will eat like a king!

No, but after surviving a scorcher (89 days of 100+ temps!) of a summer here in the "Great Southwest", I'm hoping to get my boat rebuilt this winter and be in the Northwest, fishing somewhere in Puget Sound next summer instead of watching my thermometer crawl up to 114 degrees!! LOL!!!
Sounds like a great day fishing!!

Up here in the Northeast, late September and October are prime bluefish and striper seasons. Thats when the hogs roll in. Of course, with no bunker around these parts, the big ones may stay to far off the beach, but the snapper blues are sure fun to catch.

Country road, It is good to see someone else fishing. Since the red snapper season has ended, some people think that gulf fishing is also over. The truth is fishing for salt water fish is very good right now. My son-in-law has a big outboard powered Mako and I get to go with him about once a month. I like smoked Spanish over smoked Mullet any day. My fish of choice to fish for is the Spotted Seatrout (speckled trout) but I also like to target Cobia (ling), Pompano, Tripletail (blackfish), King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead, Red Drum (redfish), Silver Seatrout (white trout), and bluefish. (Listed in the order of that I prefer to eat them). I have even had a ball catching Atlantic Croakers, hard heads, and Stingrays when other fish have been slow to bite lately. One fish that is an awful lot of fun to catch that I have not caught yet this whole year is a Jack Crevalle. A 20 to 25# Jack can put up a powerful fight when hooked on a baitcaster.
