Q:
I'm making the 15 hour drive to the Florida Keys with my father and grandfather in less than a week. None of us have ever been, and therefore have no idea where good places to fish are, and what tactics to use. We are primarily going to be targeting tarpon, redfish, snook, and trout. We are taking our 17' boat so we can get around. Any advice would be much appreciated, (I do intend to try the Tarpon with my fly rod). Many thanks.

Dito on Marathon. The overall saltwater fishing there is as good as it gets, but I still prefer the 10,000 Islands just south of Everglades City for just plain good snook fishing. A trip to either place is absolutely unforgettable. After a lifetime of fishing for almost every species of fish along the gulf coast and its tributaries, the snook has turned out to be my all time favorite for sport fishing.

10000 islands is a great spot, also consider depending on how sea worthy your boat is, when we were kids we would paddle out to small reefs, drop anchor and see what would come up. but we were about .75 to 1 mile away from shore.

All advice above sounds solid.
If possible, one or all of you hire a day charter. Careful observation should give you hints and tips that can make you successful on your own. I'm quite certain Florida guides don't have exclusive rights to GOOD fishing spots!

Thanks, we are staying in Marathon, so we lucked out there! Our boat isn't really built for the open ocean ( alumacraft bass boat) but I'm sure it'll be fine for the flats and backcounty.
