I fish a small stream in town that use to be full of stockies, but now due to over fishing they are hard to find, what techinques and lures, should i use to catch native brookies and rainbows? what should i look for in a fishing spot and structure? im using spinning gear and have never been a huge trout fisherman,

Fish deep pools, current seams, undercut banks and brush piles. Anywhere you can find a lot of cover. The native fish will not be out in the open where they're easy to find or get to. With spinning gear, I always use a silver Kastmaaster for trout. If that's common practice in your area, I would take a sharpie and put some extra spots or stipres on your lure, or switch to a mepps or another lure, just so you aren't fishing with the same thing as everyone else.
For the natives try a fly pattern such as a Wooly bugger or Royal Coachman and be very patient
