Q:
I have a small cannon downrigger that I use for fishing Rangeley Lake in Maine for Trout and Salmon. When I use the downrigger, the fish can almost never pull the line from the clamp (even an 18in, 2 1/2lb salmon). I have tried everything with the clamp but the fish can never seem to pull the line. What am I doing wrong????

I have seen trolling on the finger lakes in NY a 10 pound laker hit the lure and not pop a rigger and drag around for most the day, I suggest trying lighter clamps like the walleye styles or adjustable clips.

Not sure what downrigger release you are using but the standard little Zip Clip should be adjustable to that light of weight. If you can't adjust your release light enough, then try a different style of release. The Walker release should adjust that low and so should a Klicker (although this is more of an outrigger release). Make sure you are giving your line at least six twists before you set it in the release so that line is not pulling through from your rod tip. Set the rod tip with as much line tension as possible without releasing the line. That should pop them just fine.

Dakotaman hit the nail on the head. Make sure you tighten your rods down almost to the point they want to pop loose.
