Q:
Anyone have any advice on what to use and where to go for trout fishing in the Sacramento River. Advice for any river works just as well though. I don't fly fish so it probably shouldn't be geared towards that. Thanks.

Try the upper Sac river
For baitcasting Ive used: tiny rainbow trout colored mepps spinners, gold and silver kastmasters, and I don't know what its called, but I've got this little spoon that's pretty short and fat with dimples on it like a golf ball.
Also, I've never tried this myself, but I have heard of people trolling for big browns like you would for lake trout with several inline spinners tailed by a single spoon.
Good luck!
Haven't fished that river, but when I fish for trout in rivers and streams here I use small in line spinners, small spoons, and occasionally small jigs. I have even used an ultra light with flies. I just put a tiny(the smallest you can find) split shot about 24 inches above the fly. If you get the weight and distance right it will be just enough to cast, but not enough to drag the fly under. Have only tried this on small streams. It worked great. I don't think its the way I would go on bigger water, though.
Great points all very helpful. What would be your opinion on the use of things like salmon eggs. dtbc333 what would you do on a bigger river if you were to fish one.
Since its currently salmon "season" I'm also thinking about going for salmon and striper since i've been told the Sac river is a hotspot for those as well. I have personally never river fished salmon either.
I have done well on salmon eggs in certain spots. Also on trout worms, or even insects I catch along the edge of the creek. For the bigger water I usually go with the spinners and spoons or even a small Rapala. The one I was saying I have only tried on small water is the fly with a small split shot. I have never fished salmon, so I won't be any help there.
