Q:
Ok, I've always used live bait for trout. But lately I've been wondering about salmon eggs. How do they work? And what are the best setups?

Mr. Van Zant, shrimp eggs work well in the streams once the weather warms up a bit. Saw the boys live at the WV state fair some years back. It was worth the price of admission.

Sorry, I got distracted by the Skynyrd stuff. Put a couple on a #8 or #10 hook and fish them like power bait. Hope that helps. Ohhhh, I know a little 'bout trout, and baby I can guess the rest! Sorry Ronnie & Johnny, couldn't resist.

I use salmon eggs when fishing small mountain streams for brook trout. I like to fish them on a fly rod, with a single egg on a very small hook and a tiny split shot about 6 inches up the line....I find it very effective to bounce the egg along the bottom...this seems to lure trout from their hiding places among the rocks and other cover structures...

I use them on a size 8 hook with a small split shot on the line. They work well but sometimes a little hard to keep on the hook especially when they get a little old and soft.

Idaho,
do you have to use them for brookies during their spawning period or do they work year round?

I like to put a pink shrimp salmon egg on and then put a yellow garlic one on with it. The two colors look good in the water and produce a lot of bites for me. Use a #8 or #6 which ever you prefer more. I put a split shot on the line about 6 inches up. Sometimes I'll put a salmon egg on the hook and then "tip it" with a meal worm or a wax worm.

Salmon eggs are great in fast moving water. Have a size 10 salmon egg hook w/ a split shot.
