Q:
I am looking for an 8" hand auger, I went ice fishing for the first time the other day and loved it. I dont have enough money for a gas auger. Are the hand augers pretty much the same or should I be looking for certain things?

You want a Lazer edged auger or Mora . Stay away from the spoon type as they are worthless as spoon.
I found 2 gas augers last year for $100 ea. A new Lazer Bit auger will cost you around $90.00 , my suggestion to you is to check out Craigslist for 1. Many times as season winds down somebody will all but give ice fishing equipment away.Because ice fishing only lasts so long and many give it up after the first seaon.

I use a Lazer Edge hand auger unless fishing with guys that have a power auger. We can have six holes each so it is a workout when the ice is thick. At the end of the season or before it starts up again is a good time to find deals on used power augers. 8" is a good size.

One more thing. You can get an electric dril conversion for your auger, but save your money. They eat batteries fast in thick ice. 2 batteries will yield 2 holes in 15" ice. Thats with a Dewalt and Dewalt 18 volt batteries too.

If you want to make a hole in the ice all you really need is a spade shovel and large metal bar with a point at the end. It takes some work, but a hand auger is no walk in the park either. In all the times I have used both ways and a shovel and what we call a 5 ft bar works the best. Just remember to tie some rope to the bar before you start to use it, or you just might not ever see it again.
