What exactly does a delayed harvest mean for a trout stream? I am looking at stocking dates for streams and i have a rough idea but would be happy if someone could explain it to me

Out trout streams here in WV that are delayed harvest are catch and release usually till July or August and then are opened to keep your limit of trout. I don't know about your state.

Stocking time is usually determined by water temperature and F&G schedule. So some years the fish go in earlier than others.

But Delayed Harvest is as Sarge01 described. Your state will specify what date you can begin keeping fish from that water. Before that date, you must release the fish. But check to see if there are any other conditions that go with that - size, species, etc.

Delayed Harvest date also depends on when F&G believes the water temperature will increase to the point the habitat becomes too warm to sustain a quality fishery. So then you may begin to keep the fish. The point is to give anglers as much recreation as possible. Usually those waters are heavily fished, and if a Delayed Harvest is not imposed, it will be fished out very quickly.

Have fun!

Yep, DHALO just means that it's flys and lures, and It can be fished year round, but you can only keep them during a certain time period, a sign near the creek access will tell you all you need to know about that particular piece... If your gonna fish them I recommend getting a fly pole and using barbless hooks- Good Luck!

I live in southeast PA and the creek I fish at is Valley Creek and it is a DHALO creek. The rules are fish can be kept from June 15 - Labor Day. The rest of the year, they must be released.
