dont know about tenn, but here in central wv,its best early morning before 10 or 2 hours before dark.just find out what time their hitting the top feeding and thatll give you an idea.good luck i still have to wait on all this snow to melt before i can even get close to the creaks around here.
Each year 75 streams and small lakes are stocked to provide a trout fishery. These streams have low abundance of wild trout, or no trout at all. TWRA stocks about 325,000 9-12 inch trout between March and July. While trout fishing is allowed year-round on most of these streams, many of these waters are too warm for trout by mid summer. For this reason we limit most of the trout stocking to the spring and the best fishing is from the first stocking week until the midsummer when water temperatures exceed 70 degrees F.
If you're targeting wild fish, in western N.C., (and not very far over the border), I had a great time last June. Generally, you're looking for spring. Water level is generally how I gauge it, but a variety of factors including temp and other wildlife (as mentioned above) influence this.
I'm from southern WV and it can't be that much different there. We are only about 3 hours away from pigeon forge. I fish for trout year round. The biggest browns I've caught are in the fall. I have a hard time choosing between sitting in a tree for a deer or pounding the stream. Early spring is good for all trout, the bite picks up good through june. When summer gets here, you gotta find those deep cool holes that will hold trout.

Find out when the first big hatch in the spring is. Match it, and you will make some fish friends. Remember to take some pictures.
