Q:
New York State is on the verge of requiring personal flotation vests for ALL boating applications. My question is, what is the best PFD for hunting / fishing / kayaking, etc.

i like using the throwable, type 4 pfds b/c you can just sit on them like a cushion, but they fulfill the requirements. I use them w/ my canoe. Ive also seen/heard of pfds that are small and out of the way, then expand upon contact with the water

I have this particular vest and like it better than my other pfd's, which ride higher and kinda choke you when youre sitting on the boat...I can carry all my gear in the pockets which is handy...also good for fly/wade fishing dangerous water...

Whatever vest is the most comfortable on you. Thats all it comes down to.

I like the auto inflating vests such as those made by mustang. Much more comfortable than anything I have ever used.

i dont think they are on the verge of . it is law i live in upstate ny and you have to have an approved life vest of some sort for every one in the vessel be it boat canoe or what ever.

I have one made by Sterns and it is very comfortable and close fitting. I don't have a kayak, but I do paddle my canoe with this jacket on and I simply don't notice it at all.

The new law will require that everyone in the vessel is wearing a PFD, not merely having one on board for each person. Similar to the seat belt law.
Its waiting for the gov's signature as we blog.
Thanks for the suggestions.

You'll want one that will not chafe your arms, most life jackets made for paddling are low cut under the arms. there are many comfortable ones made today, you'll just have to try a few adn see how they feel. the auto inflaters jay mentioned are great stay out of the way and inflate when the wearer is thrown into the water, you can expect to pay between 75-300 for a good inflatable.
