Q:
I am looking at getting a new rifle scope for my Rem 700 .30-06 in the 300-400$ range. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone have anything to say about the Vortex Viper scope? I appreciate your input.

Leupold VX-II fits solidly in that category as does the 4200 Bushnell.
I've used the VX-II for years and have never had a problem with one. Optical clarity is such that I find it hard to decern any difference from the VX-III's and VX-3's I own. Lifetime warranty from Leupold applies. You can also sneak into the VX-3 category by adding a little to your top end. But... you won't be sorry with VX-II.
I recentyl purchased a 4200 Elite 3-9X40 and have been please with it as well. I'd say the scope is equal to the VX-II in evey way. Lens clarity is excellent.
You might also look at the Burris Signature Select line. Very good scopes and in some ways they are built heavier than other scopes in their class. They are fully comparable to the VX-3 by Leupold. Lifetime warranty applies as well.
Bee hit it right on the head. I have both a VX-II and a VX-III and the only difference I see is $$$. Both have great optical quality and the same lifetime warranty. Also another option is the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 that is $399.
All scopes mentioned are fine.Take a look at Nikon Monarch also.
I would second PAShooter on the Monarch. I don't think it will outshine the VX-II or Bushnell Elite 4200 but easily matches them. My 4-16x42 with mil-dots only ran me $382.
Adding to what others have suggested is Zeiss Conquest.
I think all the scopes mentioned are great scopes in that price point. The Burris Signature Select can be had for a bit over $400.
I agree with all the above. However, recently have switched to all things Bushnell because they are very good and I can get a great deal on them.
Nikon Monarch all the way Baby!!!
Go with the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 ... don't think you'll regret it. Put one on my 700 and I never looked back.
ziess conquest 3x9x40 or the leupold 3x9x40
Hands down Leupold VX-II, only one person I know of ever had a problem with his scope on a hunt. Well he did after falling to the bottom of a Alaska Mountain Sheep Hunting, but Leupold still replaced it even if it looked as if it was ran over my a train! It was bent right at the seam of the tube and front bell, one of the strongest points and they said it shouldn't of bent. NO LIE GI!
All of these suggestions are very good. If you want a very good riflescope for an even lower price, try out the new line of redfield scopes. These scopes are top of the line. www.redfield.com
Check out the Nikon Buckmaster or the Nikon Monarch I have had outstanding results over the years with both.
