I want a new rifle. A Remington model 700. I have a .270 and a .220 swift both model 700's and love them both. What is another good caliber. i was thinking 30-06. Any suggestions?

.....depends on your intent- you have a varmint and a deer/antelope/etc. If you're intent on N.American big game- I'd say something like a 300 Win Mag or 338.(elk, bear, caribou, etc.) Although I LOVE the '06 round, the .270 also covers a lot of the same ground.....on the flip side (like those of us in areas that require rifle/slug areas) maybe a really nice slug gun or at least a cantilever barrel with rifling and sights.....then you're really covered whatever the situation.
I agree with MN_deer, the 30-06 is very similar to the 270 you already have. I would go with a 300 win or 338.
P.S. I also have a 220 swift, my favorite gun by far!
I think it all depends on what you are using it for. in my opinion the 30-06 is a great all around gun that is hard to go wrong with but if you already have a 270 you probably want to
go with the 300 or 338 like was mentioned
If you've already got the .270, how about a .308 ?
I like the safety on the Browning A-Bolt better than the Mod. 700's and it's just like the one on my Mossberg !
Just a thought. The A-Bolts also have a shorter "throw"
60 degree's as oposed to 90 on your 700's
Your .220 Swift is an awesome varmint rifle and your .270 covers all medium sized game. Although it is a great round, the 30-06 covers almost the same ground as your .270. If it were me, I would consider the .300 Win mag. You can hand load it down to 30-06 behavior to be easier on your shoulder if you like, yet you can get a real velocity advantage for long range elk shots you just can't get with a 30-06. Ammo is plentiful all over the nation. You might also consider a .375 H&H since your .270 covers everything up to elk... The .375 is certainly not needed nor practical in North America but mine has become a favorite because is is just so much fun to shoot. It always gets attention at the range, I have enjoyed loading for it and it does amazing things to rocks that you won't see with anything smaller.
the 06 would be a great choice. you can find bullet weights from really low to heavy weights. great rifle. i have one.almost every one in my family hunts with one.

30-06 would be an excellent choice, I think everybody should own at least one.

If you have a 270 and wanted something bigger a 30-06 isn't enough of a jump in my opinion.
I'd get a 300 win mag.
.35 Whelen? Otherwise go with the '06.

If you want to step up into REALLY big and dangerous game go for 375 H&H otherwise a 30/06 will handle anything in the Lower 48.
If you have yor heart set on a Remington go for it but before you buy take a look at a Tikka T3. I have one and it is awsome.

What would you use the 30-06 on that you can't use the 270 on?
You can never go wrong with the 30-06.
