Its a very good Idea, Cannon Makes a good one at a reasonable price, I loaded mine up with lead shot bags on the floor and a lot of ammo on the shelves for extra weight also. No one is gonna get that sucker up the stairs.

I would always buy a safe almost double the size of what you think you need. Safes are quite expensive and take up a lot of room. With that being said, it is much better to have one big one than two smaller ones when you discover you need more room.

Sorry, forgot to add some good brands for you. I would go with Sentry or Remington. I hear a lot of good things about both of them.

The bigger they are the more guns you can fit and that is a good thing! I bought one of those cheepo's from wal mart or canadian tire that you assemble your self. It works. There are certainly more stable ones but you will pay a fortune for them.

If somebody wants into it, there going to get into it. The bigger and heavier it is, the more they have to work on taking it! I don't think you'll have to worry about a Professional Safe Cracker trying to get into it, just some Crack Head trying to make a fast buck! LOL and Bolting it to the floor and wall works great too!

It is nice to have a big one, that way you can have all of your gun related things in there. You can put your, gun's, bullets, permits, and licenses into it. And just in case the police show up, asking if you have a gun, it looks better to have it in a big safe than just laying around in your closet.

Definitely go as big as you can afford. You will probably fill it. A great investment in peace of mind. They can get stolen, though. A guy in front of me at a gun counter turned around and left practically in tears. I asked what happened. Someone had hooked up a wrecker to his gun safe and pulled it through the wall of his house. Homeowners insurance for guns is relatively inexpensive (basic policies might only cover $1,000 total in a theft). Consider it, even if you have a safe.

I spent a few days at a gun safe dealer a few years back. There are differences between the brands as far as fire ratings, wall thickness, lock mechanisms, etc. You get what you pay for. You can check them out on the Internet. Brinks, Sentry, Stack-On, Liberty, American Security, Cannon, Dakota, Homeland, Browning, Champion, Superior, Summit, Fort Knox, Gaffunder all make their own safes, if I remember correctly. Some name brands, like Remington and Winchester, are made by others. In any case, even an inexpensive safe is better than nothing.

Almost forgot ... here's a video of a cheap safe getting burglarized:

Also some other ways in, but still better than a child having easy access.

Atwoods and Tractor Supply have some nice safes for around 400-1200.

MLH,
Good post,+1 sir. I have a Winchester 24-gun, and MLH is right, they didn't make it. Champion or Superior sounds right but I'd have to look again. FWIW, I prefer one with a standard tumbler lock, not the digital battery-powered job. I just don't trust the digital ones for a number of reasons.

I bought it at Sam's club as a gift for my Dad and got it to his cabin and it wouldn't fit where we wanted it to go. So it wound up at my house.....Dang, I hate when that happens.

My experience: When they say 24 gun model, most likely 24 real varied types ain't gonna really fit. I don't have that much anyway, but the slots cut out are a little too close. Maybe 24 Winchester lever guns would fit.......
