Q:
Tom Hanks' character in "Road to Perdition" appears to use a Colt 1911 with a Colt Dick Special as a backup. Of course this was in the time of Model A's and Ford Tri-Motors. Yet this pair of guns remains difficult to beat for choices in today's high tech world. What are your choices for main concealed carry gun and backup?

Kimber Custom II, w/ Crimson Trace laser, and S&W .38 Special Airweight. Wish I could lay hands on one of those 1928 Thompsons, also. The ultimate back-up weapon!
Kimber Custum II (see profile). If I was preparing for a hostile neighborhood or questionable social envirnoment and needed a back-up, I think the Walther PPK in .380 ACP is a slim, easily concealed choice.
Star PD 45Acp, back-up my Walters PPKS in 380, for a Hostile neighborhoods AK-47, with meney 30rd mags
S&W 638 Airweight Bodyguard .38 Spl +P for most social occasions. Ruger P94 or Browning Hi-Power as a backup to an 870 if in a troublesome environment.
The .45 ACP 1911 and a small .38 Spl is never a bad choice!
I carry a "Colt Detective Special" in 38 special every day. If I truly felt there was a chance of trouble my Colt 45 1911 would be resting comfortable in a "Jackass" shoulder rig. These are the only two sidearms I practice with for defensive purposes and I am very familiar and comfortable with either.
H&K .45ACP, USP Compact would be my main squeeze and my BUG would be the Ruger LCP .380 or the Kahr P-380.
Despite having my conceal carry permit I have yet to purchase a handgun but you guys are giving me some great ideas on what to purchase. Until I buy a handgun the ol' finger under the jacket trick is gonna have to work.
HAY buckhunter the old finger in the pockit got an old boy down Orlando way shootup by his truck at a mall parking lot! eaven A.22Cal Derringer, look in to a Davis pistols. cheep list $75.00 D-series-.22Lr,.22Mag,.32Acp? GOOD LUCK!
Gotta cover all the bases.
I go down to the river every day and run mah dawgs.
I see everything.
And there are cougars and bears.
I used to tote a T/C Super 14 7mm TCU with scope in an Uncle Mike's shoulder holster.
The .38/357 Bond derringer cannot be seen under field clothing.
But I walked through a setup in front of "witnesses" with a loaded .357 Sig in my pocket.
The to-be assailants were clearly fresh out of prison.
I guess it's a good thing the Dope Gang here is unintelligent from the top down.
I do not live a normal lifestyle.
My commitment to God makes me a bad guy magnet.
Ish, Wasn't the main weapon Tom carried a Thompson with drum magazine?

I know that's right!
Couldn't hep it..
Things got out of hand at Beacon Rock State Park for a while.
I couldn't back down, because they were violating my civil rights.
I wasn't toting on the day they arrested me because I knew they had no other option.
I first complained to the FBI after I determined that the Ranger was in cahoots with the gang.
My friend Jeff got me out of jail and moved my trailer onto his property.
5 acres, way out of town, two spring-fed streams.
I live in an old Christmas tree lot with 100+ foot trees and all the hootowls and other migrating birds and animals come through.
Jeff said he's seen Elk and bobcats and pheasant.
The drinking water comes straight from the spring.
Mebbe I got kilt and went to Heaven, I don't know.
I had to sell my pistols to get the boys out of the vet's office.
Mebbe I'll get a Ruger Super Blackhawk.
After a quick and convincing day in court, I now go to a park that is on Federal Land, where the county and state have no jurisdiction.
Gotta pay for gas and we go everyday.
But I guess it's worth it.
Got over 500 acres of hilly terrain, + the riverbank and a wide creek crossing.
I love going there every day.
But especially after the first freezing storm that brings all the waterfowl down.
Gotta lotta upgrades, just by standing mah ground.
But thanks...
Del: Tom's Tommie gun certainly made its presence known in multiple scenes and goes on to demonstrate that his choices for the 1920s are just as good today. Yet probably none of us would prefer to drive cross country in a Model A Ford if an Escalade was available. Not many things from almost a hundred years ago retain the user status today of 1911s, old Colt and Smith revolvers, and, for those who are fortunate enough to own one, the Thompson in its various models.
blackdawgs: I have always been curious about those Bond derringers but have never shot one. Apparently your impression is good, are you willing to share your thoughts about the gun?
Thet Bond Derringer is gooder'n grits!
It is beautifully made stainless steel and is well balanced and is comfortable to shoot.
They have won many Old West shooting competitions with them, an I honestly can't find fault with it anywhere.
But I'm having to start over with my guns because I had a very bad year.
And the first ones I always get have to be meat-getters.
But I really like that Bond!
You can twirl it around your finger and drop it in your pocket so fast that nobody could swear they saw it.
I found the trigger guard to be an enhancement.
When it goes into your pocket, it just disappears.
My shooting style with pistols is different from most folks.
I like to hold mebbe a foot in front of my eye, with both hands.
But I get excellent accuracy that way.
The Bond is quite accurate using that technique.
I never expected accuracy.
Loaded with .38 Special+P ammo, it is an assailant's worst nightmare.
Like libertyfirst, my daily carry weapon is a Colt Detective Special. I carry mine in a paddle holster under an untucked shirt. Fortunately, I never have to go anywhere that I feel the need for more, but if I did, my choice would be my Belgian Browning Hi-Power.
I normally carry my S&W M&P .45 Compact with my Ruger SP101 chambered in .357 Magnum as a backup gun. I usually keep .38's loaded in my SP101.
I have always liked 1911's for their build and accuracy, but I have yet to find a handgun that is reliable as my M&P. I have put well into 5,000 rounds through it with not even a hiccup. Gotta love Smith & Wesson.
Hey buckhunter, is that a pistol in your pocket, or ya just happy to...you should have somthing more than a CCW Permit in those britches.
Remember to consider which BUG when you choose your primary...there's an old saying in Peace Officers' conversations; "one is none, two is one."
There are some good and not so good choices talked about here. At 23ozs, the S&W Walther PPK, PPK/S is for some, too heavy and then there's the recall issues; they throw extractors, failure to feed, hammer block is disfunctional and AD will occur.
Kel-Tec P11 9mm or Charter Arms Bulldog Pug .44 Special, depending on the clothes or circumstance, or a Taurus PT22 in .22 LR in an ankle holster if a belt holster is not appropriate.
That Charter .44 Bulldog is a show stopper for sure! I had one years ago, but got sold for grocery money or some such foolishness.
I had a Rossi 971 .357 snubbie that was a back ache looking for a place to happen. It didn't matter how I carried it, my back thumped. Couldn't hit anything with it either, no matter what I fed it. Walked into a little local gun shop one day and there laid these Bulldogs. Couple of days later the gun shop had a .357 and I had a new Bulldog. Feed it Blazer 200 gr. hollow points and accuracy is very good at defensive distances, from what I read it's about the same as .45 ACP ballistics and nobody questions the old .45's capabilities, and it weighs all of 22 ounces, I hardly know it's there. Three chambers with hollow points, two with CCI shotshells this time of the year, and we're read to roll. Like it a lot.
Odd regarding me mentioning traveling in a Model A. Today I noticed that a group of Ford Model A owners/collectors are driving their cars from northern California to southern Florida via Wyoming. Lots of nice restored coupes and sedans but no roadsters rolled through town. I wonder if they are packing 1911's and Thompsons.
Sig sauer p239 and an AMT 380 backup.
