Q:
Do you guys find that some muzzle loading powders burn cleaner than others? I am currently shooting Pyrodex and it burns really dirty. I am down to like 10 pellets left and I am debating switching to a different powder if it burns slightly cleaner.

Gee, I thought muzzle loading propellents were supposed to foul. Try the real thing in the Swiss Brand. You'll get good velocity and the stuff leaves very little residue. But... unfortunately you'll have to measure and clean!

Bee, well everything fouls. Just seeing if one does less so then others.

Bore Butter seems to help a lot though.

I switched to Triple 7, I don't know if it will be any cleaner or not.

If you have an inline, look up Blackhorn 209. It is a loose powder while it doesn't work with all breech plugs, in my T/C Triumph I have fired 22 shots without swabbing. It cleans up with Hoppes 9 or any other nitro solvent. A big plus is that is very much less corrosive than other subs and holy black.

Urbane_redneck is spot on. Blackhorn 209 is the best one I have found so far. Clean, powerful, does not deteriorate over time, does not attract moisture from the air, what more can you ask for?

The only propellant I use in my muzzleloaders is the real deal black powder. The only variation is either FF or FFF. As for fouling, that is why you spend time working up the perfert target and hunting load for your specific gun.

If your gun puts the bullet where you want it...why switch? Either way, Triple 7 does a pretty good job. I use Pyrodex pellets myself, but a friend of mine let me shoot his gun and he uses triple 7. I was impressed with the results, and figured if I ever switched I would probably use it. Good luck!

Bioguy,

Well yeah know, just tinkering. I understand the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" approach. But I just wanna make a good thing better.

My gun is currently shooting 1.5" groups at 100 yards, if my new load doesnt work I can always go back.

I've been using a brand called "White Hots" and they have been a dream. It's like cleaning a regular rifle. They only come in the 50gr pellets but I highly recommend them.

Dave,

I'm with you! Traditional rifles firing the real thing. With the round groove barrels I use in my guns fouling is not a problem. Neither is clean up. I jsut can't seem to accept a rubber stock on a muzzleloader. I'll stick to my flint and side hammer percussion guns shooting patched round balls.

I've also had good luck with Buckhorn 209 and White Hots. The powder my Accura likes the best is American Pioneer loose(much cheaper than pellets).

i shoot pyrodex pellets.....i mean how much residue is in the barrel is irrelevant to me because i clean it all the time, and having to run 2 more patches down the barrel isnt really that time consuming, and it shoots well with what i have in it.
