Q:
Ok guys I need some help please. . . I'm doing an essay for my college english class on the shortage of ammunition we have here in California. What's it like where everyone else is? Is anyone else having a difficult time finding their favorite ammo or wincing at the price once you've found it? Let me know I can use the research! Thank you so much!

i have done some research of my own on this. according to everything i have read, this shortage is completely consumer driven. the ammo factories are actually producing more ammo than before the shortage but everyone is stockpiling what they can get their hands on, myself included, i was temporarily paranoid. i bought a .380 for personal carry during the summer. the shop owner sold me one box of ammo just because i bought the gun. he didn't actually have any on the shelf. i have not been able to find a single box since then. other pistol ammo has been similar but now 9mm and .40 is pretty easy to find. i would be interested to read what you find out about this shortage. good luck with your paper.
Here in mOnatana it is very hard to find primers, powder and lead. But mostly primers. A box of a 1000 primers goes for 50 bucks. It is get their early in hte stores or not get any primers at all. The ammo prices for middle end bullets are really expensive too. I know a guy who knows a guy that bought hundreds of AR-15's but military scopes on all of them, put bipods on htem, got a buch of bannana clips and loaded them with ammo. Every third round was a tracer. He also had a ridiculous amount of ammo. I think this was in Nevada or Utah somewhere. But what I learned form this guy is that people are;nt fooling around when it commes to hogging up all of the ammo and primers.
From here in Ark. the answers are YES and YES !
Re-loading stuff is starting to go up as well.
Good luck onthat paper and let us know how you do !
Here in Northwestern Oregon, ammunition availability is gradually improving for .38 Special, 9mm, .45ACP, and .223...but the price of handloading components and factory loaded ammunition remains elevated and supplies are inconsistent on the shelves of local vendors.
Here in Michigan, it's a bit tough finding handgun ammo. Further, when you do find it, price gouging makes it a bit ridiculous. I am nearly out of 9mm and I am saving my last box, for protection/carrying until ammo comes back down. Shotgun and rifle ammo seams to be alright here, just bought some 12 gauge slugs and some 30.06 for opening week of deer season. Once again a little over priced as of recent, but you can get it without out to much issue, no go on pistol ammo though.
Here where i live in the south east there is never a shortage of ammunition i dont think ive ever seen a shortage you can run down to the local wal-mart and buy what ever you want if they dont have it which they never run out there are hunting stores on every corner and as far as prices they went up a little in the last couple of years my favorite hunting rifle shells use to cost around 25 dollars a box now i pay close to 40 which is a big price increase compared to what they were a few years ago but i dont think we have ever had a problem finding ammunition about the only problem ive ever had is finding the rite grain of bullet.
I have been able to get Plenty of 12 GA, 20 Ga, 16Ga, 30/06, 45 ACP,357&38 Cals, Plenty of Shotshell reloading supplies. I live in Kansas.
Some brands and types have been hard to find here in NB,CA this season.
In Michigan it is still pretty bad. I cant find 9mm anywhere, but the stores are getting the shipments in, but guys are buying the whole pallets that come off the truck! I can find my .223 ammo though, but it was $20 a box, no it is $30, and for my deer rifle, when i first got it a box cost $17 dollars, NOW IT IS $42!! This is ridiculous i can even fine .22LR anymore!
In VA it's pretty bad at times: Price wise and availability.
30-06 Federal Vital shock is almost $22.00 a box
30-06 Federal Core Lokt is up there too Bothe were around $16.00 a yr or so ago if you can find it.
I'm havin trouble finding Federal Slugs in my area for 12 ga. there's plenty of 20 ga though. and they are $5.00 to $8.00 dependin on where you go.
I've had touble finding my favorite game loads usually $6.00 a box of 25 for less than 10.00 now.
Reloading was difficult this past Summer in Georgia. Local stores and even big catalog suppliers like Cabelas, Bass Pro, MidwayUSA, etc. were flat out of rifle primers most of the summer. Then prices went up from $25/1000 to $50/1000; a $100% price increase. The price of bullets for reloading also jumped about 50% and powder jumped about 25% in price. Availability of all these has improved somewhat by now but stores are often out of stock. The price of shooting just went past a lot of American hunters and target shooters. My .375 H&H factory ammo went from about $1.50/shot to $4.00/shot. Shooting sports are REALLY changing... A day at the range with magnum rifles is now like burning dollar bills in your camp fire. It can pretty much take the fun out of the sport.
I bought ammo last fall; the prices were a tad high then, with less "rebates" available than the past couple of years. I have not shot through all I bought yet, so I expect to make it through the hunts I have planned. I also got a good supply of blackpowder stuff. I don't shoot competitively, just to sight in for hunting, so I'll wait until the market is glutted and sales are slow, and stock up again.
Eastern PA. Walmart usually has better prices, but less selection than Cabelas.
Th price on everything has gone up. thats never good. I can't get Federal Fusion 130 grain. I had to switch to 150 grain but I guess that`s not the end of the world!
I have been forced to wait for ammo to go on sale at the local sports stores up here in Erie, PA. I just bought some yesterday, for $15 it was a 20 round box of 130 grain .270 remington cor-lokt
